Bonfire Night

Bonfire Night

Bonfire Night is a British tradition which is celebrated every year on 5th November.

I saw the world burn
Bonfire night_01man out rubble
Book before closing

I heard sleepless children
the fifth of Beethoven
in Victorian theaters
and echoes of echoes
portents and words

already covered by the shadow
a shadow smiling
behind a white mask

and the book closes at the end
and the story eventually ends
and on the back end
after rose and flames

Guy Fawkes - The man

British conspirator Guy Fawkes was executed in 1606 for attempting to blow up the Parliament building in what became known as the Gunpowder Plot.

Born in England in 1570, British conspirator Guy Fawkes was executed in 1606 for attempting to blow up the British Parliament building in what came to be known as the Gunpowder Plot. Fawkes and a group of other Catholic conspirators, looking to overthrow the current Protestant regime, had planted at least 20 barrels of gunpowder under the building prior to the attempted attack.

Halloween Festivals from the U.S.A.

What do people do?

Halloween is usually celebrated amongst family, friends and, sometimes, co-workers. However, some areas hold large community events. Parties and other events may be planned on October 31 or in the weekends before and after this date. Adults may celebrate by watching horror films, holding costume parties or creating haunted houses or graveyards.

Background

Halloween originated as a pagan festival in parts of Northern Europe, particularly around what is now the United Kingdom. Many European cultural traditions hold that Halloween is a time when magic is most potent and spirits can make contact with the physical world. In Christian times, it became a celebration of the evening before All Saints’ Day. Immigrants from Scotland and Ireland brought the holiday to the United States.

he visto al mundo quemarse
salir al hombre entre escombros
del libro antes de cerrarse
he oído a niños insomnes
con la quinta de Beethoven
en teatros victorianos
y los ecos de los ecos
de portentos y palabras
cubierto ya por la sombra
una sombra que sonríe
tras una máscara blanca
y el libro al final se cierra
y el cuento al final se acaba

Remember, remember...

The 5th of November is drawing closer. As our students know, in that day we celebrate that the "evil" Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Parliament, and kill the King, but was successfully stopped.

Mr Guy Fawkes

People gather in the streets of many English cities to make bonfires, enjoy the fireworks and burn efigies of mr. Fawkes. But... was he really that bad? What did he want to do? Who was Guy Fawkes? Who helped him? Was he really a traitor?

Bonfires and fireworks

Very soon, you will find the answers to all of these questions in our blog, plus some bonus, like information on the breathtakingly beautiful city of York, home of Guy Fawkes.

York Minster

So, remember, remember,
The fifth of November
The Gunpowder treason and plot;

Should ever be forgot!

  Guy fawkes night (November 5)

Guy Fawkes Night is celebrated in Britain annually on November 5th. The event is accompanied by firework displays, the lighting of bonfires and the ceremonial effigy-burning of one Guy Fawkes. The origin of this celebration stems from events which took place in 1605 and was a conspiracy known as "The Gunpowder Plot," intended to take place on November 5th of that year (the day set for the opening of Parliament). The object of The Gunpowder Plot was to blow up English Parliament along with the ruling monarch, King James I. It was hoped that such a disaster would initiate a great uprising of English Catholics, who were distressed by the increased severity of penal laws against the practice of their religion.
